Imbokodo in Bloom: A Tribute to the Women Who Hold Us Together

“Wathint’ Abafazi, Wathint’ Imbokodo.”

There’s a reason South Africa stops to celebrate every 9th of August. National Women’s Day is a living reminder of the power, courage, and quiet revolution of South African women. It honours the group who, in 1956, gathered outside the Union Buildings in protest against apartheid pass laws and refused to be moved.

Led by iconic figures like Lillian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Rahima Moosa, and Sophia Williams-De Bruyn, more than 20,000 fierce marchers paved the way for us to stand taller today. Seventy years later, that fire still burns and is being carried forward by the grace, care, and courage of the women we know and love today.

She’s Your Imbokodo

Is she the one holding it down when the Wi-Fi’s off, the loadshedding’s on, and the deadline is 10 minutes away? The one who’s up early for campus, late for work, and still finds time for a voice note that starts with, “I know you’re stressed, but…”? 

She’s the friend who shows up right now, not now now, hypes you up like it’s her profession, and somehow turns the tension into a punchline. She might be the mother who keeps it all together, the chommie who listens without judging, the mentor who lifts you higher, the partner who knows your heart, or the neighbour who quietly raised half the street. 

She’s the shoulder, the sharp tongue, and the soft landing. She knows when you need a hug, and when you need a little tsek to get it together. The one who reminds you to drink water, submits your documents before you remember they're due, and still offers you a plate on her hardest days. She’ll say she’s just doing her part. But we both know, she’s the reason the parts come together at all.

This Women’s Month, We Honour Her
