100 Birthday Message Ideas: What to Write on the Card
The flowers are the easy part. It is the little card that makes people freeze.
So here are 100 birthday messages you can use exactly as they are. They are grouped by who you are writing to, so you can jump straight to the section you need: for her, for him, for Mum, for Dad, for a friend, for a colleague, for the big milestone birthdays, plus funny lines, short one-liners, blessings and a handful in Afrikaans.
Nothing here is longer than a card allows. Pick one, change a name, add a memory if you have space, and you are done. If you are sending flowers with it, our florists write the card by hand at the studio before the bouquet leaves, so keep it to a sentence or three and it will look lovely.
The three-part formula, if you get stuck
Almost every good birthday card follows the same shape. Greet, name something specific, then wish them forward.
- Greet. "Happy birthday, Thandi."
- Name something specific. One detail only you would know. "Thank you for that Sunday phone call in June. It helped more than you realise."
- Wish them forward. "I hope this year is kind to you."
The middle line is the one that matters. Everything else is packaging. If you only have room for one sentence, make it that one.

Birthday messages for Mum
Mothers tend to keep cards. That is worth remembering when you choose one of these. Specific beats sentimental every time, so if you can name one thing she did for you this year, add it.
- Happy birthday, Mum. Thank you for everything, including the things I never noticed at the time.
- You have given me more than I can fit on a card. Happy birthday.
- Happy birthday to the woman who taught me almost everything worth knowing.

- You are the reason this family works. Enjoy your day.
- Happy birthday, Ma. Sending love from here to there.
Birthday messages for Dad
Dads are notoriously hard to write for, mostly because many of them are hard to compliment directly. Plain and slightly understated tends to land better than effusive.
- Happy birthday, Dad. Thanks for the advice, even the bits I ignored.
- You made everything look easy. I know now that it wasn't. Happy birthday.
- Happy birthday to the man who taught me how to show up.
- Wishing you a slow, quiet, thoroughly undisturbed birthday.
- Happy birthday, Dad. The braai is yours today and nobody is allowed to help.
- Thank you for being someone I could always phone. Happy birthday.
- Happy birthday, Pa. I hope this year is good to you.
- You have earned the big chair and the remote. Happy birthday.
Birthday messages for a friend
Old friends do not need explaining to. New friends appreciate the effort. Either way, the shortest, most direct version of what you actually mean is usually the right one.
- Happy birthday to the friend who always answers.
- Another year of putting up with me. Thank you, and happy birthday.
- Happy birthday. Life is far better with you in it.
- You are the friend everyone wishes they had. Enjoy your day.

- Wishing you a year of good news and better company.

- Distance changes nothing. Happy birthday, my friend.
- Happy birthday to someone who deserves a very good year.
- Cheers to you today, and to many more of these.

Milestone birthday messages
Big round numbers make people reflective, whether they admit it or not. A milestone card can carry a little more weight than a normal one, so this is the moment to say the thing you have been meaning to say.
21st birthday
- Happy 21st. The world is wide open. Go and have a look at it.
- Twenty-one. Old enough to know better, young enough to ignore it.
- Happy 21st birthday. We are so proud of the person you have become.
- Here is your key, your card and all our love. Happy 21st.
30th birthday
- Happy 30th. This decade suits you already.
- Thirty looks good on you. Happy birthday.
- Happy 30th birthday. You have built something worth being proud of.

40th birthday
- Happy 40th. You are properly hitting your stride.
- Forty years of being exactly, unapologetically yourself. Happy birthday.
- Happy 40th birthday. Wiser, funnier and only slightly creakier.
- Here is to forty years down and the best ones still ahead.
50th birthday
- Happy 50th. Half a century of doing it your way.
- Fifty years, and not one of them wasted. Happy birthday.
- Happy 50th birthday. Thank you for everything you have given the people around you.
- Here is to the next fifty, taken a little more slowly.

- Mixed Roses, from R420. Eight stems in whatever colours the florist has looking best that morning.

Funny birthday messages
Use these on people who will definitely laugh. You know who they are.
- Happy birthday. You are not old, you are vintage. Slightly dusty, but valuable.
- Another year closer to that afternoon nap being socially acceptable.
- Happy birthday. I would have baked, but I like you too much.
- You are ageing beautifully. Annoyingly so, actually.
- Happy birthday. I bought you flowers because they last longer than my baking.

- Happy birthday. Let's pretend we are both still in our twenties.
- I was going to make a joke about your age, but the card is too small.
Religious and spiritual birthday messages
For family and friends who would welcome a blessing rather than a joke. These work equally well written out in full or paired with a favourite verse of your own choosing.
- Wishing you a blessed birthday and a year held in good hands.
- May this year bring you peace, health and plenty of joy. Happy birthday.
- Happy birthday. You are prayed for and dearly loved.
- May the Lord bless you and keep you through this new year of your life.
- Wishing you grace for every day of the year ahead. Happy birthday.
- Happy birthday. May your year be full of quiet blessings and answered prayers.
Birthday messages in Afrikaans
Worth knowing: "veels geluk" and "baie geluk" both mean congratulations, and either is correct on a birthday card. Afrikaans speakers tend to use "veels geluk met jou verjaarsdag" as the standard greeting. A rough English translation follows each one in brackets, in case you are borrowing the language rather than speaking it.
- Veels geluk met jou verjaarsdag. Geniet elke oomblik. (Congratulations on your birthday. Enjoy every moment.)
- Baie geluk. Mag hierdie jaar vir jou mooi wees. (Congratulations. May this year be a beautiful one for you.)
- Veels geluk, my vriend. Jy word net beter met die jare. (Congratulations, my friend. You only get better with the years.)
- Mag jou dag vol liefde, lag en koek wees. (May your day be full of love, laughter and cake.)
- Veels geluk met jou spesiale dag. Ons is dankbaar vir jou. (Congratulations on your special day. We are grateful for you.)
- Baie geluk met jou verjaarsdag, Ma. Jy is ons hart. (Happy birthday, Mum. You are our heart.)
Frequently asked questions
What should I write in a birthday card if I do not know the person well?
Keep it short, warm and general. "Wishing you a wonderful year ahead" or "Happy birthday, hope you have a lovely day" is always safe. Sign your full name if there is any chance they will not recognise your handwriting.
How long should a birthday message be?
Two or three short sentences is plenty for a standard gift card. If our florist is writing the card by hand for you, aim for around 30 words so it fits comfortably and stays easy to read.
What do you write on a card that goes with flowers?
The flowers already carry the sentiment, so the card only needs to name the reason. One line about the occasion and one line about the person works well. Something like: "Happy birthday. These made me think of you."
Is it too late to send a birthday message?
No. A late birthday message is far better than none. Say so lightly and move on: "Late, but no less meant. Happy birthday." Order before 14:00 and your florist can usually still deliver the same day.
Should I sign a birthday card from just me or from everyone?
If you are sending on behalf of a group, say who the group is rather than listing everyone: "from all of us in the finance team" or "from the Botha family". If it is personal, sign it yourself.
Before you send
Pick your message, add one detail only you would know, and let the flowers do the rest. Order before 14:00 and an independent florist near your recipient will arrange it that morning and deliver it the same day, straight from their studio. There is no warehouse in the middle and no long-distance courier, which is why the flowers arrive looking like they were picked for one person rather than packed for a thousand.
One practical note for September birthdays. We are heading into spring here, so the local markets are full at the moment and your florist has more to work with than at any other time of year. If your recipient likes a surprise, a florist's choice arrangement is the best value you will get all year.
